Fashion Retail Buying activity

This course is the activity section connected to 2500 Fashion Retailing. In this class, we applied the retail math principles learned in the lecture section to Microsoft Excel. This gave us hands-on experience of what it would be like to work as a buyer in a real company. This meant that we planned purchases, figured out the costs of the planned inventory, and ultimately made six months' plans to plan for the fashion seasons. The key learning from this course is how to use the many different functions of excel to allow us to efficiently fill out sheets of information. Over the course of the semester, we built to a point in our learning where we could perform equations, accurately reference information from other charts and locations, and organize data to be useful. I feel very comfortable using Excel because of this class and I have used it to quickly finish assignments I have had in other classes. The thing that surprised me during this course was how useful Excel could be. I had trouble using Excel in a previous class where we were expected to know Excel already but now, I see how easy it is to use. Being able to easily use the software makes it a great tool for anyone who is looking to organize data for any reason whether it is for business and retail or for scientific research. As a result of this class, I am more prepared to work as a professional within production and or sustainability once I graduate. I do not think I have seen a job description that did not look for a candidate that had some knowledge of Excel. I did not run into many challenges during this class because I was comfortable with following her instructions as she presented the information in class.

Apparel Product development simulation

AMM 4140 is a lab class focused on developing a clothing line for the Bronco Bookstore. In the class we were split into 4 different groups and worked between teams to develop a cohesive collection. This semester and class lead to a line presentation with final prototypes on models in front of industry professionals and the bookstore buyer. The team leader helped communicate between teams and with marketing efforts. Our team prototype was a success in my opinion. The fabric sourced has a really cool effect with its diagonal print and the dtg print is a classic graphic. The raglan sleeves with striping detail is a great way to use lines within a garment alongside the princess seams which create multiple pockets throughout.

Apparel Professional Development
I genuinely enjoyed this course and what I gained from our assignments and lectures. The first takeaway is how the hiring process works. Learning how companies might approach a hire is invaluable information for the job market, especially when you a have a degree that will lead you to higher paid positions. This knowledge has helped me form an improved resume and has encouraged me to better document and present my skills to possible employers in a more effective way. Another takeaway was to sharpen the intangible skills that every professional can benefit from. Working with LinkedIn and LinkedIn Learning has opened my eyes to the possibility of developing skills that are present on job listings or related to them so recruiters will be able to find me better through my account and resume. I think the information in this course was helpful. Some things I feel like I got a refreshing review of while other assignments had new information to me. The assignment that stuck out to me the most was the M7 assignment because I think that personal branding is essential for designers/artists to become professionals. Most of the guest speakers were valuable but I think I would have liked to have had more speakers within production. Ximena is the guest speaker that stuck with me the most because I feel like her story and career was closest to what I imagine would be similar to my career. I think that this is my main criticism because I feel like the class was beneficial to retail emphasis students the most while textile and production students did not get a similar experience. I also would have liked to work on portfolio’s or a similar aspect where we found professional ways to present our work to employers within the fashion industry.

Textile Fabrications

This class taught most importantly what goes into a textile name. Before this class, I always referred to garments by their fiber content and not by their proper name. Learning why some are twills or weft knits really helped me understand that there is a way to get specific so that you can order or produce a fabric to your liking that is appropriate for your project. This changed my perspective by inspiring me to create with the medium more appropriately. Currently, I can not tell a fabric from another in many cases. I can pick from a jobber though and the ability to has improved a bit. My favorite topics were surface designs and coloration. It is interesting to see how fiber and fabric play a part in this process of textile design. My favorite surprise from this course was how certain fibers have inherent health benefits and I am excited to see how this can be used to reach a better future for all who use textiles. I would be interested in working to expand my design from surface manipulation and design to going deeper into the textile from production to fiber. My final takeaway from this class is that despite the fact that I want to mainly upcycle and work with second-hand and vintage clothing, my work would actually be improved by further understanding textiles, their make-up, properties and ideal end uses.

Apparel Technical Design

Introduction

The main focus of this class was to create a highly detailed technical package for a men’s button up shirt in a group of three. During this process we learned the importance of each sheet needed for the manufacture of a shirt and how to get the right materials and correct construction. We learn to calculate fabric use, cost and develop the visuals that are needed to develop an apparel product like hangtags, labels, and mood boards.

The learning objectives include evaluating apparel product development in relation to garment construction methods, fit specifications, cost of materials, technology of use, and garment illustrations to get a garment accurate to the original design standards. The main learning objective was identifying and understanding the relationship between factors of the product development process and how to communicate that effectively to overseas manufacturers to produce a quality product.

Artifact

The assignment I felt I learned the most from was the modules on measurements, fitting and, silhouette and the module on garment construction. These modules gave me insight into how a sample becomes a final product with fittings and measurement corrections. I feel like after this module I am more comfortable with working with a manufacturer and producing my garments to the measurements and sizes I had in mind when designing. I feel like this has allowed me to be better with apparel product development quality assurance and more comfortable with it, which is the best achievement of this module. The garment construction module taught me to order the construction of my garment in a cost-effective and people friendly manner so that garments workers will make better quality garments. Seam types were a good review within this module and it inspired me to rethink the seams that I use for my garments.

Reflection

I learned how to effectively create a tech pack so that I could create a garment through a manufacturer with the help of my teammates. Throughout the course of the semester, we started from a mood board and line sheet then to sourcing then to artwork labels and garment construction. The final tech pack had all of the corrections we needed to complete throughout the assignments we turned in. I can apply this experience and knowledge to my future career by learning from my experience working within a team and the experience of creating a tech pack will help me create my garments on a with other producers when creating my designs independently. The t-shirt we created at the end opened my eyes to how I could have more creative designs that fit my visions produced in multiples based on samples I create and develop from there. I think is where the two modules that I mentioned with the most importance to me really help me. Having fittings to test the fit of the garment along with detailed and accurate measurements will help me create proper sizes with no fit problems and garment construction helps me properly communicate an effective and efficient way of reproducing my original design. I think this is what shows the most growth for me during my time in this class and its assignments, I have gained not only knowledge but also confidence to create innovative wholesale garments with the assistance of a manufacturer.
